{"id":104,"date":"2008-08-28T02:40:51","date_gmt":"2008-08-28T02:40:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.zelmastrip.com\/wordpress\/?p=104"},"modified":"2008-08-28T02:40:51","modified_gmt":"2008-08-28T02:40:51","slug":"saturday-23rd-august-cardwell-to-kurrimine-beach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zelmastrip.com\/wordpress\/?p=104","title":{"rendered":"Saturday 23rd August &#8211; Cardwell to Kurrimine Beach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I checked out of Kookaburra park in Cardwell and drove up the A1 (Bruce Highway) to South Mission Beach.\u00a0 I had a look round and also went to Mission Beach itself to check it out.\u00a0 From Mission Beach I took the coast road to Bingil Bay which was great.\u00a0 Once I had rejoined the A1 I headed the short distance North to Kurrimine Beach where I checked into Kurrimine Beach holiday park.\u00a0 The park itself was lovely with a huge pool and friendly staff.\u00a0 The manager was Australian and his wife Philippino.\u00a0 They had lots of comedy arguments which always seemed to result in her in absolute stitches with him saying things like, &#8220;What am I gonna do with ya?&#8221;.\u00a0 He also walked around with a cockatiel on his shoulder which apparently flew in through the office window.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From the caravan park I headed down to the boat ramp as I had been told that this was the place where the reef was closest to the shore.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t snorkel, however, for three reasons.\u00a0 The first, and perhaps the most important one, being that I didn&#8217;t have a snorkel and mask.\u00a0 The second reason was that, although sunny, it was very windy and the thought of getting out of the sea into the wind didn&#8217;t really appeal.\u00a0 The final reason was that there were crocodile signs everwhere.\u00a0 I decided to opt for lunch instead and had the amazingly healthy chocolate milkshake, chips and a pluto pup.\u00a0 A plutp pup is essentially a hot dog sausage, covered in batter and on a stick.\u00a0 Yes, very healthy, very vegetarian and -very- tasty!<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After filling my guts I headed back to the caravan park where I discovered that the electric cable I had was not long enough to reach the socket in the park.\u00a0 There was always something, Bernie was a trier!\u00a0 So I went to the office only to be given a non-compatible extension prior to some neighbouring campers, or rather caravaners if that&#8217;s a word, lending a hand and an extension cable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I spent the rest of the day doing washing and headed down to the beach for a lovely walk.\u00a0 As I wondered along the beach I saw several stinger stations with advice about jellyfish stings and vinegar in case you did get stung.\u00a0 Back at the park I settled into Bernie with a glass of wine and finally finished S21.\u00a0 Although I have moaned about the book something chronic it really was a very good account of the atrocities which went on.\u00a0 So if anyone feels like a really happy, light, holiday read try &#8220;Voices from S21 &#8211; terror and history in Pol Pot&#8217;s secret prison&#8221; by David Chandler.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I checked out of Kookaburra park in Cardwell and drove up the A1 (Bruce Highway) to South Mission Beach.\u00a0 I had a look round and also went to Mission Beach itself to check it out.\u00a0 From Mission Beach I took the coast road to Bingil Bay which was great.\u00a0 Once I had rejoined the A1 [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.zelmastrip.com\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/104"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.zelmastrip.com\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.zelmastrip.com\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.zelmastrip.com\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.zelmastrip.com\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=104"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.zelmastrip.com\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/104\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.zelmastrip.com\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=104"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.zelmastrip.com\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=104"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.zelmastrip.com\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=104"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
